Business Law

Van Meter Law recognizes that you make daily decisions while managing your business which may have legal consequences. Van Meter Law serves as general legal counsel to provide legal advice on day-to-day operations on a variety of issues including contract negotiation, review, and drafting, vendor agreements, vendor relations/disputes, and real estate leases. We also provide risk management support by drafting internal programs which incorporate best practices to promote the health and success of your business. The firm further provides legal advice for those just starting your business, including incorporation, drafting of your operating agreement, assistance in establishing payroll, tax accounts, and workers’ compensation insurance.

Employment Law

As a business owner, one of your most significant assets is your employees. Thus, valuing your employees and effectively handling issues that affect your team is essential to your success. Van Meter Law provides legal advice on employment issues including drafting of policies and procedures which enable you to care for your people while ensuring that you are in compliance with state and federal laws. We also advise on matters which often overlap with workers’ compensation claims including leaves of absence, compensation, Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), Americans with Disabilities (ADA), and retaliation. We further provide legal advice on matters including employee contracts, non-competition and confidentiality agreements, as well as severance agreements.

Workers' Compensation

Navigating the landscape of a work-related injury can be a tedious and cumbersome process. There are multiple state forms, hearings, deadlines, and appeals. Van Meter Law provides business owners with the support and legal advice you require to successfully navigate the workers’ compensation system and reach a positive resolution. We represent Ohio state-funded and self-insured employers and manage all aspects of a case including claims investigation and development of case strategy. We also provide representation for all administrative hearings before the Ohio Industrial Commission, litigation before all courts throughout Ohio, and Appeals in Mandamus before the 10th District Court of Appeals. The firm further defends employers in matters regarding Violation of Specific Safety Requirement (VSSR) including management of the on-site state investigation, all hearings, and resolution or settlement. Van Meter Law also has significant experience providing legal advice in drafting workers’ compensation programs. Specifically, while in house with Walmart Stores, Inc., Attorney Stephanie Van Meter co-drafted the Walmart Wyoming (ERISA) Workers’ Compensation Benefits Plan which is still utilized by Walmart today.
